S.T.A.R. Academy is an early childhood learning academy in Malawi, created for children ages 3 to 7. Our purpose is to give young children a strong beginning — academically, socially, emotionally, spiritually, and creatively. S.T.A.R. stands for Scholars Training for Achievement & Rise, and every word of that name is lived out each day inside our classroom walls.
We believe a child's earliest years shape the person they become. With the right structure, love, discipline, reading, numbers, hygiene, creativity, and encouragement, a child can begin to see themselves not as forgotten — but as chosen, capable, and rising. S.T.A.R. Academy exists to help children become confident learners, strong thinkers, respectful leaders, and creative builders of tomorrow.
Our mission is to educate, nourish, inspire, and prepare young children in Malawi to become the people of tomorrow. At S.T.A.R. Academy, we believe education is more than books. It is confidence. It is cleanliness. It is discipline. It is kindness. It is creativity. It is learning how to speak, read, count, share, build, listen, and dream. We are creating a safe, loving, structured environment where children can learn early skills, develop strong character, and discover their gifts.
Marcello Thedford and Trina McGee came to Malawi with a mission larger than travel. Their journey to the continent of Africa was rooted in purpose, family, faith, service, and the belief that building something meaningful begins with helping children. For Marcello and Trina, Malawi represents more than a place on the map — it represents a return to the continent, a chance to build with the people, create opportunity, support families, and help children rise.
After seeing the needs of young children in Malawi — especially children ages 3 to 9 who need early education, structure, meals, hygiene, creativity, confidence, and care — Marcello and Trina felt called to build a place where children could be seen, loved, taught, and prepared for tomorrow.
For Marcello and Trina, Malawi represents more than a place on the map. It represents a return to the continent — a chance to build with the people, create opportunity, support families, and help children rise. Trina McGee, known to many families around the world through her work in television, including Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World, has spent years connecting with audiences across generations. Marcello Thedford, an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and builder, brings a vision of creating schools, businesses, jobs, and sustainable community projects.
Together, their mission in Malawi is simple but powerful: Build. Serve. Teach. Create. Uplift.
S.T.A.R. Academy is not just a location. It is a place where children are seen. It is a place where young minds are trained to rise. It is a place where creativity becomes opportunity — and where donors from around the world can directly support the development of children, teachers, families, and the next generation of Malawi.
The children of today are the leaders, builders, teachers, artists, mothers, fathers, farmers, business owners, and visionaries of tomorrow. At S.T.A.R. Academy, we are not only teaching children their letters and numbers — we are helping them understand that they matter.
Posture, presence, and pride in who they are and where they come from — built one day at a time.
Language, literacy, and the ability to communicate with confidence from the earliest years of life.
Art, craft, imagination, and problem-solving woven into everything we do inside S.T.A.R. Academy.
Every child leaves S.T.A.R. Academy knowing they are capable, valued, and destined to rise.
Every decision at S.T.A.R. Academy — from classroom design to curriculum to the way we speak to children — is rooted in these eight foundational values. They are not just words on a wall. They are the living principles that guide our mission every single day.
Every child has a purpose and deserves the opportunity to discover it early.
Early education is one of the strongest tools for changing a child's future forever.
Every child is treated with respect, patience, love, and the dignity they deserve.
Children thrive when they have routine, order, guidance, and clear expectations.
Children should not only learn — they should create, build, imagine, and express themselves.
It takes families, teachers, donors, businesses, and communities to raise strong children.
We honor Malawi, African culture, African creativity, and the future of the continent.
Donors deserve to understand exactly how their support helps children, teachers, and the school.

Kids Malawi is the creative online store supporting S.T.A.R. Academy. Every purchase helps fund education, meals, supplies, creative programs, and opportunities for children in Malawi. When you shop, you are not just buying a product — you are helping a child learn, eat, create, grow, and rise.
At S.T.A.R. Academy, children are not only learning — they are creating. Through crafts, art, clothing ideas, hats, and handmade pieces, they begin to see that creativity can become opportunity. Kids Malawi turns that creativity into real, lasting support for the academy and the children who call it home.
Trina McGee, known to many families around the world through her work in television — including Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World — has spent years connecting with audiences across generations. Her visibility is not a brand strategy. It is a bridge — from the families who grew up watching her to the children of Malawi who need the world to see them.
Marcello Thedford, an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and builder, brings a vision of creating schools, businesses, jobs, and sustainable community projects that can outlast any single visit. Together, they are not passing through Malawi. They are building within it.
